Ocmulgee River Lab 1

To determine the elevation, we used two poles connected by a string. We put the poles on level ground and ensured that the string was also level. We anchored the string on one pole, and moved the second pole to another location. When the string was flat again, if the two sides were at different locations along the poles, we knew there was an elevation change. By subtracting one number from the other, we determined the change in elevation.

We also looked at the number of clams in certain locations along the river bank.

We found the most clams in the river, close to the shore, and less along dry riverbeds and islands. We shoveled dirt into a sift and picked out the clams.

To determine flow rate, we let a ball float along the river and calculated how long it took the ball to get from one place to the other.

Bathymetric Map

Bathymetric maps are types of isopleth maps. Like a topographic map, lines and color transitions portray certain values. With a bathymetric map, this typically shows depths in bodies of water.

Topographic Map

Topographic maps typically portray elevation, and lines/color transitions portray different values and elevations. The closer the lines are, the steeper the incline. A topographic map is a type of isopleth map.

Isopleth Map

In an isopleth map, lines delineate a boundary which represents a certain value such as elevation. They are typically used in showing the weather.

Proportional Symbol Map

In a proportional symbol map, the size/area of a symbol represents a specific value. It is a kind of thematic map that shows particular themes across certain areas.

Dot Density Map

In a dot density map, dots represent some numerical value. It is primarily used to represent certain patterns or distributions.

Choropleth Map

A choropleth map portrays shaded or patterned areas which represent certain numerical values or statistics. A choropleth map is a type of thematic map, and it provides an easy way to visualize how certain values differ across a large region.
